It is the time of wars between the Normans and Saxons. The Saxon Wilfred of Ivanhoe loves Rowena but is banished, as his father wants her to enter a politically arranged marriage. So Ivanhoe goes on crusade with Richard the Lionheart and they become close. Richard is imprisoned in Austria and his brother John sides with the Normans. The story centres on the tournament at Ashby where Richard, unbeknown to all, with Ivanhoe are victorious against John's knights.

Sir Walter Scott was born in Edinburgh in 1771 and died in 1832 after a life practising law and then going into printing. Ivanhoe is his most famous work, as part of the Waverley novels. It features Robin Hood and Friar Tuck.
