Gwendolen Harleth married the arrogant Henleigh Mallinger Grandcourt for his money and not for love. She steals his affections before Lydia Glasher, a long-standing friend, can win him. The marriage, though, is very unhappy and Gwendolen goes to Daniel Dorona, an idealistic young man, for spiritual advice.
George Eliot was born in 1819 and died in 1880. This is her final novel, the only one to be set in contemporary Victorian society. A major theme is that of professional and artistic dedication. At the time, the sympathetic Jewish plot was frowned upon. The novel mixing social satire with moral searching.
