This is an account of one day in Dublin, the 16th June 1904. Stephen Dedalus meets the Jew working in advertising, Leopold Bloom, when both are wandering through the streets. Following the structure of Homer's Odyssey (Stephen is Telemachus, Bloom Odysseus, his wife Penelope), they visit a public bath, a funeral, a newspaper office, a library, a pub, a maternity hospital and a brothel.
James Joyce was born in Dublin in 1882, educated by the Jesuits, and died in 1941. He vehemently rejected his faith. The book was first published in France and only came to England in 1936. It was immediately widely condemned as obscene. It was a work of experimentation in language and structure, mixing up Homeric myth, humour, Irish folklore, anti-Catholic sentiment and scholastic philosophy.
