The last novel in the William Monk saga, set in the late 19th century, describes the city of London in great detail. Most of the story focuses on investigating who has betrayed the protagonist's trust, as someone has reported a secret tour. The thriller also seeks to discover who is to blame for Kate's death. Monk becomes involved in the operation. Other murders occur, what is going on?

It is a thriller with unexpected twists and turns, where both the cop and the prosecutor are guided more by mixed feelings than by objective evidence. There are deep reflections on loyalty, friendship, love, family and grief, which add an interesting background to the plot. The intrigue remains constant, and it is clear that, under the pressure of the media and the threat of capital punishment, an innocent person could be convicted. The novel is well written.
