A play set in 19th century Norway. A cheerful, dedicated but unconscious wife and mother is blackmailed by a man from whom she borrowed money in the past to save her sick husband's life. She tries to get rid of the problem, but it's impossible for her, so decides to run away from the dishonor through suicide. At the last moment the threat is undone, but the image that remains of the husband's love and of herself is radically different.
