The author wrote extraordinary stories and this is undoubtedly one of them. Its protagonist is William Legrand, a passionate entomologist. Together with a servant named Jupiter, they live on an island off the coast of South Carolina. The protagonist of the story finds an unknown species of beetle on the coast; because of its color, bright golden and its weight, it looks as if it were made of gold. With a friend he organizes an expedition. They find a skull and begin an investigation. The story continues with an explanation of how to interpret a drawing and various signs. A reader interested in the author's deductions will enjoy following the comments; if not, perhaps this is not an ideal story for that reader.
