Nocturnes is a soliloquy: a kind of letter of conscience, from someone who has dedicated his life to study and who has a special sensitivity to understand the meaning of what sorround him, from someone with a weakness for beauty, with a great responsibility towards his brothers, a creature of the world who seeks to reach God. The book begins with reflections on nature and historical traces, and then moves on to the more contemporary realities of the church in France and of several French intellectuals of his time.
