Rob Horton, a 12-year-old boy, lives in a Florida motel with his father, struggling with the recent loss of his mother. One day, he discovers a caged tiger in the woods, which becomes a metaphor for his own suppressed emotions. At the same time, he befriends Sistine Bailey, a fierce and outspoken girl who encourages him to express his feelings. As their friendship grows, they both confront their inner struggles and find a way to deal with pain, grief, and freedom.

The novel explores complex themes such as loss, resilience, and emotional repression through a symbolic narrative. The characters are well-developed, especially Rob, whose internal conflict and personal growth make the story deeply moving. The book is short but impactful, ideal for middle-grade readers and beyond.
