Under the Net is the first of many novels by Iris Murdoch, an English philosopher and novelist. Set in London, it is the story of a struggling young writer, Jake Donaghue. Its mixture of the philosophical and the picaresque has made it one of her most popular novels. The plot is engaging, if rather absurd, and the characters charming.

In 2005, the novel was chosen by TIME magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to present. It is far from being that good, but it is entertaining and intelligent.

While it has few positive moral features, at least it is not negative.
