It is the second in the Mickey Haller series and the 14th in the Harry Bosh saga. In this novel the main character is defense attorney Haller who comments from the beginning "That's my job. To be the truth in a place where everybody lies". Mickey takes on a case that was being handled by his fellow lawyer Jerry Vincent who was murdered. The defense of a famous Hollywood producer, Walter Elliot, accused of a double murder. Most of the book takes place in the courtroom.

It is an excellent novel of intrigue, clean, exciting and tense. It is very well narrated, keeps the reader in suspense until the end, easy to read, action-packed. The plot is interesting. The characters are very well profiled. With an initial confrontation between Haller and Bosh that ends in an alliance. They discover they are half-brothers and unite in the end seeking justice. It has been carried over to a Netflix series titled "The Lincoln Lawyer" as Mickey chooses his Lincoln car as a place to work.
