It is the first in the series by Michael Haller, another of the author's protagonists besides Harry Bosh whose personality leaves an impression on readers. He is a defense attorney in the world of drug addiction, homicide, illegal gambling..... The case of this judicial thriller is that of Louis Roulet, a wealthy heir, arrested. For Haller it involves an unaccustomed income. He discovers some loose ends and decides to investigate to the bottom.
The book denounces a world without truth of judges, prosecutors and defense lawyers. Haller has always thought that he is able to recognize if the accused is innocent by looking him slowly in the eye. The atmosphere of the courtroom is sordid as prostitution and rape abound. Connelly does not dwell on these issues, nor does he describe unnecessary details.

It goes from surprise to surprise, the dialogues are intelligent. It has an excellent and unexpected ending. It moves the reader to think about the morals of lawyers, ethics, conscience.
