In the 1950s, Italo Calvino began to work on the selection of two hundred tales from Italian folklore. A fantastic world with its medieval influence and the chivalric epic.
In the fairy tales, Calvino connects the stories of the past with future realities. He is interested in transmitting respect for tradition.
The tales are short, fantastic stories, which can be read by both children and adults. They all have a happy ending, good triumphs over evil. The characters are transformed into real magicians blessed with powers that transcend natural laws.
In the preface, Calvino states that the stories contain inner truths. It is not a matter of imagination, but a journey through fairy tales.
