The second book in the Hunt trilogy, for young adults, The Prey takes up at the point where the first book ended, with Gene fleeing from the hunters with the other humans he has managed to get out of the Dome. But his worries continue: first, what has happened to Ashley June whom he left behind; and then, his growing feeling for Sissy, the only girl in the group of escapees. Gene is an exemplary young man with courage and other virtues, though his outlook is earthbound; the book offers a good character-study of him, as well as Sissy who becomes a major figure. The plot is fairly predictable, especially at the beginning, though the pace improves in the final third of the book. Some of the scenes of blood and violence are presented in harrowing detail.
